   "I was as good as he" said the bacach from Maypole. "A bet was put down against me to put a flock of swallows into the pound. The swallows were let out. I went after them and took no rest or breath till I had put the last swallows of them into the pound before sun-down."

   "And what about me?" said the third bacach "When I was a boy, I had a step-mother who was very hard on me. She spread the feathers out one day to dry under the sun and set me to mind them. A blast of wind came and carried feathers all over Ireland. She said if I had not caught up with and
