- Oats Making.
In Spring the farmer ploughs the ground for oats. He then harrows it.
Then he sows the seed.
When the oats comes up and when it is about two inches over the ground he rolls it with a heavy roller.
When harvest comes the oats is ripe and it is cut.
Long ago it was cut with reaping hooks and scythes
Now they have all sorts of machines for cutting and binding it.
Then it is put in stooks ten sheaves in each stook.
It is left in that way for about a week then it is put in stacks.
After a while it is drawn into the haggard ready for threshing.
The people long ago threshed it with a flail, but now it is done with threshing mills.
Then it is brought to a mill and made into meal for feeding purposes.
