The spades are bought in a shop.
Sometimes the people help one another to sow their potatoes, and later on to dig and pick them. When the stalks appear above the ground the potatoes are grubbed and then moulded ; and when they are nearly grown they are grubbed and moulded again.
The children of the house pick the potatoes in autumn.
Sometimes we dig them out, sometimes we plough them out, and sometimes we take them out with a digger. We store our potatoes in pits. We dig a long hole in the ground and we put the potatoes into it and cover them with hay and straw.
We sow many kinds of potatoes in our district - British Queens, Champions, Kerr's-Pinks, Spies, Up-to-dates, Arran wonders, and Epicures. Kerr's-Pinks grow best in our district. They used to starch clothes with the potato-water in the olden days, but they don't use it now in our district.
