- About one hundred and twenty years ago there was a hedge school set up in the townland of Killard. This hedge school was in Grey's field in Killard and the children were taught in a little thatched house under a hill which was in the field. There were seventeen or eighteen pupils going to this school and each boy had to bring the teacher two sods of turf and a penny every morning in order to pay the master for teaching them. These pupils were taught English, Arithmetic, Latin and Geography. In his hedge school there was only one teacher and his name was Master Brennan. The master lodged in farmer's house each night and he used to pay for his lodging out of the money he earned. The master in this school used a piece of cardboard for a blackboard.
