- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)out into the bog, and collected a bundle of suitable wishes. These were brought in and left on the hearth to day for a while. The the bark of the rushes was taken off, so that there was nothing left but the pith and dough. The fat of the sheep was then procured and melted in a large tub which was placed beside the fire. The tub which was used was called a "grisset". The rushes were cut into the required lengths and then were drawn through the rendered fat. The fat was then allowed to cool on the rushes and the candles were then completed. The fat was not pleased on the fire because it would melt too quickly and then the candles would be useless. It was an old custom not to place the "grisset" on the fire and if anyone, did place the vessel on the fire it was believed that the candles would not light.
