- Thatching is still carried on and still we can see the thatcher climbing his ladder with his bundle of straw under his arm preparing to cover the roof with a new golden coat. The most famous thatcher in this locality was the "Thatcher Carey" who lived in Monaduff a townsland about two miles from the school. When the farmer wished to get his house thatched he invariably sent for this man. He used a mallet, straw and some pointed hazel rods. He placed a "beart" of straw on the roof, then placed one of the rods called a scallop in position and then beat it into place with his mallet. He continued in this manner until he had the house thatched. But his craft like all the other ones is dying out because we seldom see thatched roofs on houses now.About a few hundred yards(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
