  1. The Castle of Moate

The castle is the oldest building in Moate. It is said that there were ghosts seen in it. Some years ago it was owned by old Mr. Clibborn of this district.
In early days it was part of an old monastery which was built there. The monks who lived there said mass in the Carmelite church.
In the penal times they travelled to say mass through an underground passage. The monks' secret was found out and they were trapped and starved to death.
After this the religious things were taken and burnt. Some of the monastery was knocked down and the Clibborn family were given the rest.
The baptismal font is to be seen near the place: it was about three feet high and the people believe that St. Patrick knelt there to wash his hands. There is a mark on the place where he knelt. There is supposed to be a cure for warts in the water contained in the basin.
