  1. I
As I roved into Ballymahon one evening last July
I was after a long walk from the town of Athy
My pockets were empty my purse it was light
And I had but one shilling for my lodging that night.
    II
I went up to Mrs.Killions to try and get a place
And now boys ye would call it a common disgrace
I asked for my lodging and she said “it’s all right”
“But remember my charge is a shilling a night.
    III
Now I said Mrs.Killion you do not fear God
For to think how a poor man could pay you a bob
I remember the time when three pence was all right
So now you are charging a shilling a night.
    IV
Now she said Paddy Murphy I’ll have you to know
This house is my own if you like you can go
And you will not find better and search till daylight
And that’s the raison I’m chargin a shilling a night.
    V
Now I said “Mrs.Killion I will have you to know
If the poorhouse was open it’s there I would go
For you keep the worst beds from here to Clonmel and you
have them in thousands both black, blue and white
And they’ll torture the man paying the shilling a night.
