- The people made their own candles long ago, in the following way.
First the rushes were cut and peeled while green. There was one strip of the green back left. They were then tied up in dozen bundles to dry. After this old fats were rendered in a griset. A griset is an oval shaped pan, hollowed in the centre like a boat, with three feet under it. The rushes were then dipped in the grease, one by one, they were then hung up to dry.
