- candle making. His mother told him that in her parents time often she saw her mother gathering rushes. These rushes she gathered were called bull rushes. With them she would make rush candles which were the only means of light the people at that time had.The way she made them was first dry them. Then peel them and leave a back on them. When they were fully dry she would dip them in boiling fat and leave them on a paper to dry. Then they were ready for use.
