Lough Gamhna means the lough of the calf.

Lough Gamhna means the Lough of the calf. According to old tradition we are told that Lough Gamhna was formed in the following way:-
There was a well known as "Tobar Gamna" which accommodated a great many families.
This well was covered by a large flag which had to be removed in order to get water out of the well. On one occasion a woman came to draw water from this well and she was in such haste, back to her baby, who was crying after her, that she forgot to cover it again and a calf jumped out of the well and every place the calf went the water followed him, and formed into this large expanse of water called Lough Gamhna.
