    This part of North Longford is connected very much with Irish History. Every person in this district were all on the one side to free their native land. When the people of North Longford heard the French were coming to Ballinamuck they joined up together and sided Humbert to wipe out the English. The Irish met the French at Cattan Bridge and marched into Ballinamuck to rout the English. After four weeks of drill the Irish and French encountered the English "red coats" at Fairglass crossroads where the Irish slew seven hundred "red coats and bravely held their ground. They pushed on to the battle-field of Ballinamuck. The women fought side by side with their husbands. The battle lasted five hours until the field was a sea of blood. The Irish marched off the field with flags flying and started off for Ballinalee and camped in a
