23rd March, 1938. The most harmful weeds growing on our farm of Carrickduff, Granard, Co. Longford are - the thistle, the bohalan, the crow-foot, the dock, and chickenweed. These weeds spread rapidly and make the soil very poor if they are not cut out in time.
The weeds that grow in good land are the sow-thistle, the bohalan, and scutch-grass. Those that grown in bad land are the dandelion, the crow-foot, the nettle and the dock.
The nettle, the dandelion, and scutch-grass have medicinal properties. From the root of the nettle, beer is taken and this is used as a cure for measles and the nerves. The dandelion is used as a cure for consumption. The roots and stems are boiled and then it is strained and left in bottles for use.
