Granard
There is quite a lot of history in connection with the town of Granard.
There is a huge mound near the Chapel in Granard from which the town is supposed to have got its name.
The following is the story.
Long ago in Ireland there lived a king called Niall of the Nine Hostages who had eight sons
He left some territory called Meathus lith which means fertile land to the eldest son Cairbre
The land is extremely fertile to this day and is regarded as some of the best fattening land in Ireland
Cairbre was a very important prince
His employees built the moat in Granard for him but when he saw it he was displeased with it and uttered a remark to that effect
"It is an ugly height" he said we do not know why he passed(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
