Local CustomsSome people in the district believed that it was lucky to place a piece of rowan tree over the byre door or over the kitchen before the fire was lighted
They also placed a piece in the fire
This prevented butter from being stolen during the year
Another custom was to place a fresh sod of turf on the fire if a person entered while churning was in progress this also prevented the butter from being stolen
Others adopted the custom of quenching a live coal in a bucket of water placed beside the churn.
This also was supposed to prevent butter from being stolen
