Ar an leathanach seo
- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)and grate them on a grater i.e. a piece of tin with hole bored in it. Then this grated stuff would be put in a cloth and wrung i.e. all the water squeezed out of it. Then they would boil potatoes, peel and bruise them and add them to the grated ones. They mixed this into a dough and shaped it into dumplings and boiled them in a pot of boiling water for thirty minutes.
A Boxty Loaf was made as the dumplings but was baked in an oven.
Bread was often baked in front of the fire standing against a support i.e. a pot-led left up against a kettle before the fire then the cake was left standing up against the pot-led.
Now we see the potato was the staple food in Ireland long ago when they weren't eating it in bread they had boiled potato and a noggin of buttermilk for supper.
An old man named John Mulligan says there were no mugs in olden days the people used "Noggins" i.e. wooden vessells in the shape of mugs which(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
