    The old methods that were employed for giving light at night were bog-deal splinters and rush candles.
    The bog-deal splinters were blocks of wood that were got in the bog and when they were put on the fire they made a beautiful bright light that shone through the house.
    The rush candles were made from rushes. First the rushes were gathered and hung up to dry after which they were peeled and dipped in fat.
    These materials for giving light were made locally by the people/
