- The first thing my father does is to plough the ridges. Then he draws out the manure and puts it it out in heaps about a perch apart. After that he spreads it on them. Then I go out and drop the splits about 10 or 12 inches apart. There are three splits across a ridge. Then he covers them with clay. They are left there till they are nearly up over the clay and then the furrows are "scored" and the clay is shovelled up on. The breadth of the ridge and the furrow is about 4 1/2 feet.
