- In about half a mile of the road in this district there were about six houses that are not there now. The potatoes rotted in the ground. The people ate stirabout instead. I do not know whether Government relief came to this district. A lot of people died. The following (year) Spring imported potatoes were sown namely Scotch Downs which came from Scotland. The Government brought huge boilers of Indian stirabout to the country and would give it to any one who would deny their religion. Not many took it. People still talk of it and of people eating roots and horse beans baked in cakes.
