the old ones and settled down as small farmers or fishermen. There are still a few persons in the Area who have not yet seen a railway train. The majority of the inhabitants in the area are related. The village of Goleen is not mentioned in any song or saying but the village of Crookhaven, situated about five miles away, was once a famous fishing village in days of old. The villages of Goleen and Crookhaven are referred to in poetry and stories of the sea.
The land surrounding Goleen is composed mostly of rocks. There are a few small fields of poor soil; and from these local farmers have to eke out a living. There are no trees growing, and ditches dividing farms and fields are made of stone and rock slabs. There are no rivers or streams, but there is a large lake known as Lissagriffen Lake, and on it are about five hundred swans, which are a lovely sight in Summer time. These swans are practically tame, and will eat food, out of a person's hands.
