- Long ago people took three meals in the day. In the Spring and Summer mornings men went out to work fasting at six p'clock and worked until eight. They had breakfast then which consisted of porridge and butter-milk. Some families if they could afford it had tea and one slice of soda bread afterwards. In later years it was the custom to have a small "squib" of tea on rising (about six o'clock). The men then went to work and were called in for their breakfast of porridge which the women had boiled and ready by eight o'clock.
