The school in mid-Drumliff was taught in the open and on a large flat piece of rock beside where it was held we are told the scholars wrote their exercises. The teachers were members of local families and lived in their own houses. These teachers were not paid by money but in kind.
The subjects taught in these hedge schools were Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Spelling, Greek, Latin and Agriculture. Two of the books were Foster's Spelling Book and Book of Agriculture.
Writing was done on slates or with goose quills on paper. The children stood or sat on the grass while being taught.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
