- Marriages take place locally within a month before Shrove. Tuesday's and Friday's are said to be unlucky days for marriage. An old saying is Happy is the bride that the sun shines, on, which means a marriage celebrated on a sunny day. Matches are made in the district. The bride's parents generally give money as a dowry.
