- Shops were not common in olden times. People had to go to the nearest town or village to make purchases. Labour was often given in exchange for goods. In olden times it was considered unlucky to transact business on Sundays. In former times the markets were held in the towns and villages. In former times pedlars, dealers and hucksters collecting rags visited the district. The silver four penny piece is gone out of use. In olden times a shilling was called a bob, and a sixpence a kid's eye.
