such as a piece of a palm tree. When the people are milking cows they generally sing, and this makes the cow let down the milk more freely. If the byre is warm the cows give more milk.
In olden times the stable was much like the byre, except that it was divided into stables by means of stone or wooden partitions - thus giving a separate place to each horse. The manger, however, was not the same. The horses' fodder consistedof hay, straw, and oats. Some horses were not shod at all, and those that were shod were done like this. The shoe was nailed on, and then the nails were clenched, when they came through the hoof. The hair-clipping was done with a pair of scissors, but on some occasions lamp-oil was put on the hair, and burned off.
A story is told of a man who had a horse, and he could not sell him owing to a mark that was on his leg. Another man told him if he brought his horse to a certain sand-hill, and get one of the pebbles, and tap it on his leg, the mark would disappear. The man did so and the mark vanished, and he sold his horse and got a splendid price for him.
