    there to ferment and the liquid was called "Sowens". From the "Sowens" "Flummery" was made, and the people drank the "Flummery" with porridge.
    The table was placed near the wall and the people sat round it. It was the custom to hang up the table when not in use. Meat was not often eaten and when it was eaten it was always salt. Fish were often eaten particularly herrings, and vegetables were also used such as cabbages and turnips.
    People did not eat late at night. Certain food was eaten on special occasions such as on Easter Day, Hallow Eve Night, and Christmas Day. Eggs were used at Easter. Colcannon, boxley, apples and nuts on Hallow Eve Night, and plum puddings at Christmas.
    Tea was used first in the district about eighty years ago. The only vessels that I know were used in the district before cups became common were noggins and mugs without handles and wooden eggcups.
