    potatoes were broughtfrom Scotland and these are still used. The government gave work to the distressed people, and this work usually consisted of making roads and harbours etc. and they got about one shilling a day and with this money they had to feed themselves and their families.
    The people were so weak from hunger that they were not able to work and a lot of people died at their posts. Maize meal was then supplied, but the people did not know how to cook it and they were so hungry, that many of them ate it raw, and some of them died after eating it.
    There has been many periods of the potato crop failing since, but the distress has not been so bad as the distress of 1846 and 1847 as there was more imported food in circulation.
