  1. I asked Pat Smith last week about the great famine and he told me that he heard his father say that the year before the famine the people had more potatoes than they could use. They had so much that they did not need to dig any new ones until September. The season was wet and the blight fell early on the stalks before they got time to grow. The potatoes blackened and rotted and when they were put in the pits they decayed also.
Owen Smith Gola had nearly no black potatoes because he dug them early and the ground was dry. The people died of hunger at the backs of ditches and many died of fever the year after the famine because they had to eat bad dirty food. The people ate horses and rats.
