  1. Once upon a time there was a man whose name was Lindsey and he lived in Ashfield. One day as he was cleaning out his well, he happened to go down a piece too far and he saw a lining of bricks. Then he went in and told his wife and she said they could make an arch with the bricks. So the next day he went to the well and got the bricks and made the arch. And at that his best cow died. Then one after another all his cows died, till the people told him to put back the bricks. And when he did, he had a good luck ever after.

  2. Once upon a time there was a man named Mikey Darreganah of Corregha, Lavey, Stradone. He was coming home from a card party one night and he had won two chickens at it. On his way home he had to cross a ford, but when he got to it, there was a wee woman washing something like a sheet in it. She asked him to help her to wring it. He said he couldn't because he had two chickens in his hands and if he left them down they would run away. She told him to leave them down on the grass and he did so, and helped he to wring it, and when they had it wrung she put it about her shoulders and said
