- Potatoes are sown in this district regularly every year. They are sown in ridges and in drills. The ground is first ploughed harrowed and rolled.
Then the drills are opened and manure is spread along the furrows.
The potato sets are then sown about a foot a part. The drills are then closed by means of a plough.
While the potatoes are growing they are landed, wed, and sprayed.
There are several kinds of potatoes. The ones sown in this district are the Irish Queens, Kerrs pinks, Arran Victor and British premier.
About 100 years ago timber ploughs were used. There are no spades made in the district. Neighbours help each other setting the potatoes.
Long ago people used to keep potatoes in pits in the gardens. They used to cover them with clay and rushes.
Very nice cakes are made from potatoes called potato cakes.- Bailitheoir
