    And with a bloody hatchet
I then cut off her head
    Her infant it kept crying
As she lay on the floor
I threw her in a blazing fire
    Where soon she was consumed
    A carman being passing by
    He heard the dreadful moan
Through the window he did look
And saw the man there go
The carman to the police he went
And this to them did say
    "I saw a dreadful murder
    I pray make no delay"
The police then, they came with him
    They house they did surround.
    Soon they had me taken
    My hands were strongly bound
They marched me off to Carlow Town
    No hope of liberty.
At night fall in my lonely cell
    Her ghost appeared to me
Her blood in streams, I saw quite plain
    To increase my misery
Tis cursed gold I may blame
    For my sad destiny.
