When a travelling tailor visit a tailor's shop and the tailor or his men give him sixpence, a shilling or some small sum like that it is referred to as the "boot".
Pedlars visited this district in former times in much greater numbers than now although some still come. Some things which they have with them for sale are scrubbing brushes, hairpins, pins needles, laces and various other small articles. A man who goes around carrying his pack is called a pedlar and the man who goes round with a pony and cart or an ass and cart is referred to as a hawker.
