Ar an leathanach seo
- The Local ForgeThere are two forges in this district & the smiths' names are Edward Doyle & Michael Minogue.
The forges are quite modern with slated roofs and the smiths are only working for some years. Their fathers were not smiths.
Minogue's forge is situated in Ballinagough & Doyle's in Cappantrahane each by the roadside.
No stream Etc. runs near them.
Each has the usual apparatus suitable for a smithy i.e. a bellows, a fire, an anvil, sledges Etc.
Horses & Asses are shod. Harrows, grabbers, & gates are made by them. Minogue makes ploughs. No spades, shovels Etc. are made.
Wheels are shod in the open air.
The wheel to be shod is placed on a large flat stone something larger than the wheel.
There is a hole in the centre to let down the stick. The iron band which is made something smaller than the rim is heated white hot in a good turf fire. Two men with irons locally called "dogs" lift the heated rim & place over the wheel. The smith sledges down the iron rim over the wheel. Then water is poured over to cool the iron.
There is no local belief about the forge-water.
