- Food in olden times.In older times people had three meals a day. People rose very early and worked very hard. In summer they usually started their daily labour about 6 am & without eating any breakfast which was not usually eaten till 10 or 11 am. & consisted of potatoes and sour milk or butter-milk.
For dinner the same was eaten & as trout, pike, perch & eels were very plentiful & were caught in the lake those fish were [used] very used or often. If a good supply was caught the fish were salted & eaten as required. Supper was always eaten at a late hour & consisted of potatoes& sour-milk. If oats was plentiful oatmeal porridge was a favourite dish with sour milk.
In well to do farmers' houses the table was placed in the centre of the floor for the meals but amongst the poorer class of people & when the Kitchen was ornate the table was placed next the wall.
Mrs Thomas Fahy of Chapel house, informed me that in some v. small kitchens the tables used to be hung up on the wall when not in use.
