- Buying & SelllingShops were not common here in olden times. I heard that there was one shop in Gweeneny which was situated about 100 yds from the old church on the site of which the present curate's house is built. But some people used to travel to Scariff, Killaloe & even into Limerick for certain goods which they required.
Buying & selling were carried on after Mass & the same custom continues to the present day.
Instead of paying cash for goods the country people brought butter & eggs to the shops & they got any articles they required in exchange. The custom still persists here.
People used to work for shopkeepers & get flour & other necessaries for their services.
In like manner if a poor person got seed Potatoes Etc. from a farmer he would work for him to repay the debt.
When goods are got from a shop-keeper without money they are said to be got on "Tick" or "Straps".
No markets were held here in former times.
