- In the year nineteen seventeen in themonth of January there came great snow. There was never so high a snowfall in Ireland before. It lasted about three weeks.
It started about night-fall one evening and it continued the whole night. In the morning it was about twelve feet high in parts.
Cattle were half starved with hunger because no one could give them hay till the way up to the stable and up to the rick was cleared. Some people whose hay-ricks were a long way from the house were the whole of the next day readying the way and the cattle were jumping mad with hunger through the stable.
