    were carried out in the district, the evicted people going to England, the Continent, and America.
    Because he had helped England in a war, the first lord Dillion was granted all this district, from Bellahy to Charlestown. The land was divided into farms; these farms were not sub-divided among members of families. Tithes were collected by the landlord for the Parson of Ballinlough. They were paid in money.
    The name of the landlord of the part of Roscommon nearest to us was Lord De Freyne. The people called him Colonel French. He had the privilege of saving three man from the gallows each year. One of them, whose name was ? made up a song about him, beginning with,
    "Long Life to Colonel French,
    Long may he be my friend.
    He saved me from the gallows tree,
    And the disgrace of such and end."

    Eight thousand miles away."
