  1. In this district in former days the people had numerous little industries all done nearly by hand. There was candle-making, soap-manufactures, basket-making, manufactures of spades, gates, ploughs, fire cranes, spinning, weaving, dyeing, thatching, rope-making, wheel-making, whip-making and the burning of lime. Some of these little industries are still in existence.
    Candles were made in every house, out of rushes, and also out of bog-dale. The rushes were pulled in bunches from the roots,
