  1. Long ago the people were very thrifty. Every man was able to make every article needed in the home. First they made their own candles.
    They got rushes and peeled them and dried them and dipped them into melted tallow when that was set the candles was fit for use.
    They also made candlesticks from wood and they kept them white by scrubbing them with fine sand as they had no paint.
    They also made places for hens to lay. These were made of straw plaited together. They were wide at
