  1. In the olden times the people of Ireland never bought flour as we do now, but they always made their own from oatmeal and wheat-meal as they were very industrious. They never baked any bread for the following day but early in the morning they went out to the corn field with a big straw rope, tied the rope round the stook and carried it home on their backs. Then they got two sticks and tied the two ends of each of them together
