In this part of the country it is a custom when a person comes from a corpse - house to taste a bit of salt and to throw the rest into the fire. This is supposed to keep the death from the persons house.
It is considered unlucky to put the ashes out on May morning. It is also considered unlucky to look to the new moon through glass.
If a person accidentally breaks a looking glass he is supposed to have misfortune for seven years. It is believed if a person meets with an accident the people who are looking on should say "God bless us" and if they failed to do so the fairies would bring the person and leave a sick person in his place. It is believed if a person sees a fine beast at his neighbour he should say "God bless her" so as to save her from the fairies.
It is believed that a girl will be handsome ever afterwards if she goes out early on May morning and washes her face with the dew under a hawthorn tree. When a person hears the cuckoo for the first time he will have luck for that year if there is a white hair on the sole of his right shoe.
