- Almost in every district in Ireland there are fields with ancient names.
In the parish of Achonry on the land of William McDonagh, who is my uncle, there is a cross cut into one of his fields.
There is no name on this field but there is an old story told about it.
Once upon a time there was a monastery in the old graveyard of Achonry, and when Cromwell came to that district he destroyed the monastery and killed all the monks but one, who escaped. When he had gone some distance he saw the(continues on next page)- Collector
