  1. Long ago people used to have for their breakfast yellow meal stirrabout made from the night before with a little of salt in it and buttermilk. Sometimes round the Christmas they got a cup of milk after the stirrabout and that was a treat.
    The children used to have a lump of cold stirrabout for their lunch, but some of the richer folk used to oatbread and butter. The oatmeal was mixed with a small grain of salt and wet with lukewarm water. They used to roll out the dough to about a half an inch in thickness. Then the dough shaped like a penny or triangle was placed before a bright fire upright on its edge on a clean flag with another flag to lean against. It was turned according as it was getting brown. When it was quite brown it was then baked and ready for eating. This was the
