“There lived a man in Ballina called "fiddler Murphy" so called because he was a distinguished fiddler.”
There lived a man in Ballina called "fiddler Murphy" so called because he was a distinguished fiddler. He used to play on the streets of Ballina along with his father. He lived on this for a long time and after a while he went out in the "Boer" war. The people were lonely after him. The war was not long on until a ballad singer came saying "Murphy was killed". He was an English ballad singer and he said "He fought a brave battle but he was killed at last". The people were so sorry as they bought the ballad. Shortly after this on a bright May morning the fiddle player who was supposed to be dead came home but still the people kept the ballads. One evening near teatime he went to the canal for a bath where he was found drowned next day.- Informant
