    There was once a man and his wife who had only two daughters.

    (continued from previous page)
    young lady appeared to them and asked them where were they going. They said that they were sent by their stepmother to the lake for a swan's egg, and they said that they could not get to it. The lady said that she would get it for them. but that she would have to cut the leg off herself. She got the egg for them. They were delighted to get it, and thanked the lady. Then she disappeared. The children then returned home to their stepmother. She was glad to get it, and was very good to the children ever after that.
