In the year eighteen thirty nine
a great storm of wind occurred here
in Ireland. It affected the whole
country but some places suffered
more than others. My grandmother
who was told of this great storm by
her father told me that this storm
occurred on Shrove Tuesday eighteen
thirty nine. On the evening before
the storm the sky became very
dark and the wind turned very
cold and wet. People could see that
a storm was coming on so they went
out to see were all securely shut
and all the ricks securely tied down:
The storm began with a very wild
night> The wind rattled all the doors
and windows and it continued the
same way for two days and two
nights. It affected the people very much.
There was one woman who had a
little shed on which the roof was
very loose and seeing that, she went
up on the roof to fix it. She was
too late for the wind carried away
