In ’81 ere the summer solstice
Their drums were beaten and their sashes aired
Their flutes were tuned up and their anger stirred up
And they showed the world that they never cared
To show the papists who were bosses,
A grand procession for the twelfth was planned
Right through the village of Dunkineely
And there they intended to take their stand
To Ballintra with band, and banner
Of old king Billy on his famous steed
On that July morning the brethren wandered
To curse the Pope and his seed and breed.
They passed the day in the usual fashion
And drank the health of old Dutch Bill
Played “Kick the Pope” and to h- with papists
And ate and drank their hearty fill.
But the papists heard of the orange intentions
And crowded in to Dunkineely town
And swore by all that was high and holy
That the orange mob would not pass down
Their weapons few but their hearts were true
They lined the street on either side
They had stones and bottles and some stout beetles
To try the thickness of an orangeman’s hide
