About thirty years ago there came a man named Critcheley to this district as a labourer. He worked with different farmers in the neighbourhood. He was supposed to have the Black Art. This magic he practised chiefly by taking money from anyone with whom he saw it. Nobody ever discovered how he took it but if a person with money produced it in his company it was always missing after Critcheley left. He was arrested several times but as nothing could be proved against him he was always released.
