their splendid offerings of gold, frankincense and myrrh, to the Infant Saviour she drew back sad and unhappy, because her hands were empty. As she was retracing her steps a glorious light shone around her, and one of the herald angels stood before her and inquired "Little one, why are you so sorrowful?" Because I have no gift for the Child of Bethlehem, she answered. With a smile the angel waved a lily that he carried, and immediately the ground was white with roses. With a cry of joy the little girl filled her arms with the spotless white roses and hastened back to the stable. Then when at last she knelt in adoration at the manger bed, the Holy Child turned away from the magnificent gifts of the Wise men, smiled upon the little girl and reached out His tiny Hands for the lovely Christmas roses.
