- About a hundred years ago the people of this district attended a hedge school the ruins of which are still to be seen in Ballinamona near Kylebrack.
The teachers, Mr Smiley a stranger and his wife who came from this district taught in a barn and lodged in a house close by.
The children were seated round the wall on piles of stones and wrote on slates on their knees. I believe instruction was given in English though teachers and pupils spoke Irish. Reading, writing, arithmetic were taught.
The children brough vegetables, milk and other things to the teacher. Each day Mrs Smiley made out a list of the vegetables and other things that the pupils were to bring the following day one child brought a(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
